Memorial Day: A Time to Remember and the Unofficial Start of Summer

I can't believe it's the 6th edition of the newsletter. Thank you all for subscribing.

What's happening this week.

During National Police Week 2025, four Central New York officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., recognizing their ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. A candlelight vigil at the National Mall honored:

  • Lt. Michael Hoosock (Onondaga Co. Sheriff) and Officer Michael Jensen (Syracuse PD) – killed in an April 2024 ambush in Salina.

  • Deputy Cailee Campbell (Oswego Co. Sheriff) – died in a Sept. 2024 crash in Volney.

  • Sgt. Ronald Owen (Oneida Nation Police) – died from COVID-19 in Nov. 2020.

Let’s take a moment to remember the heroes who protect our communities every day.

Arts and culture organizations across the Mohawk Valley are getting a facelift thanks to the NYS Council on the Arts’ Capital Project Fund, which awarded $86 million statewide. The funds support infrastructure improvements in three tiers—from small projects to major capital work—with 75% going to organizations with budgets under $3 million. Mohawk Valley recipients include:

  • National Baseball Hall of Fame – $3.75M

  • Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute – $1M

  • Klinkhart Hall Arts Center – $540K

  • Utica Public Library – $383K

  • Lexington Foundation – $297K

  • Greater Oneonta Historical Society – $99K

  • Waterville Historical Society – $81K

  • Foothills Performing Arts Center – $60K

  • Kirkland Arts Center – $51K

Governor Hochul announced awards for 19 transformational projects in three Mohawk Valley towns and cities to revitalize and boost economic growth. Two programs, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward, provided the funds for projects in each of the locations.

  • Herkimer won $10 million from their round 7 win to fund 9 projects from DRI.

  • Booneville won $4.5 million from their round 2 win to fund 6 projects from DRI.

  • Herkimer won $4.5 million from their round 2 win to fund 5 projects from NY Forward.

The official 2025 Boilermaker after-race beer has been named. The announcement was made last week and hit the news like a firestorm. We’ll give you a guess at what brewery… That’s right, Utica’s brewery. Saranac.

Saranac’s new mid-strength beer, The Weekend Warrior, has been crowned the official after-race beer. According to the Saranac website, mid-strength beer is the hottest beer trend coming to the US after being popular in the UK, Australia, and other locations. We’re excited to try it. If you have had it, let us know what you think. Use the hashtag below on social to join the Weekend Warrior crew..
